Discover how a few small changes can restore energy, balance hormones and keep you feeling like yourself
Hello everyone! Today, I want to talk about something so many women overlook: the need to de-stress, especially as we hit 50 and beyond. During the week, I had a conversation with a friend who mentioned that she feels more stressed than ever. Between balancing work, family, and personal commitments, she often feels worn out, with no time left to unwind. I know she’s not alone in this.
Stress impacts all of us, but for women over 50, it can have particularly frustrating effects on health and well-being. Here’s why learning to manage stress is essential—and some simple ways you can bring a little more calm into your life.
Why does stress hit differently after 50?
For women, midlife brings unique hormonal changes, like menopause, that can already feel challenging on the mind and body. Add stress into the mix, and these natural shifts can become even harder to manage. Stress doesn’t just make you feel emotionally drained; it also affects your physical health in ways that many women aren’t aware of:
Hormone imbalances
Chronic stress throws your hormones off balance, which can worsen hot flushes, fatigue, or mood swings. When you’re stressed, cortisol levels rise, which can interfere with your body’s natural rhythms and make menopause symptoms worse.
Increased fatigue
When stress disrupts your sleep and recovery, it can make you feel sluggish and tired. Unfortunately, this can become a cycle of exhaustion that’s hard to break.
Weight gain
Stress-related hormone fluctuations can also impact metabolism, making it easier to gain weight—particularly around the midsection. I know this can be frustrating, but it’s possible to address with the right steps.
Immune system suppression
Chronic stress suppresses your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds, infections, and other illnesses that you might have fended off more easily in younger years.
The benefits of de-stressing
When you take the time to manage stress, it can transform your health, energy, and outlook on life. Reducing stress helps:
Support hormone balance
Lowering cortisol levels helps your hormones function as they should, reducing symptoms of menopause and helping you feel more like yourself again.
Boost energy
Destressing can improve the quality of your sleep, helping you feel more refreshed and ready for the day.
Strengthen immunity
A calm, relaxed body is better able to fight off illness, keep inflammation down and maintain good health overall.
How to destress in everyday life
Sometimes, the idea of “reducing stress” sounds easier said than done. But even small steps can have big effects over time. Here are some tips to help you start:
Breathe and move
A quick walk in nature, some gentle stretching, or even 5 minutes of deep breathing can do wonders. Physical movement releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, while deep breathing calms your nervous system.
Prioritise ‘me time’
Whether it’s reading, painting, gardening, or simply relaxing with a cup of tea, find moments of joy that help you disconnect from daily stresses. Remember, you deserve time to unwind.
Consider nutritional support
Eating the right foods can make a huge difference in stress management. Magnesium, for example, is known for its calming effects. Simple changes to your diet can help stabilise your mood and give you a steady supply of energy.
Connect with friends
Connection with others is one of the best stress relievers. Pick up the phone, meet for a coffee, or set up a video chat. Sharing laughs and stories is one of the most powerful ways to reduce stress and feel supported.
Mindfulness and meditation
Try incorporating a few minutes of mindfulness into your routine. There are great apps and guided meditations that can help you get started. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but once you start noticing the calming effects, you’ll be hooked.
Make stress management a priority for your health
Stress is part of life, but it doesn’t have to rule yours. When you start making small, manageable changes, you’ll notice big improvements in how you feel, inside and out. And if you ever need someone to talk to about managing stress and supporting your body through nutrition, I'd love to hear from you.
